Question: What Was Your First Domain Name?

We're feeling a little curious today, so we have a couple questions for our community.

  • What was the first domain name you registered?
  • Do you still have/use it?
  • Do you even remember what your first domain purchase was? ;)

We'd love to hear from you! We'll also randomly select a comment and award the poster $25 in account credit, so happy commenting!

The first domain that I bought myself was dansoftaustralia.net, back in 2005 (at DomainSite!). I've still got it, but the site is quite abandoned now. Before then, I had dansoftaustralia.com bought by a friend in 2004, but it expired and got stolen by domain squatters, which is why I bought the .NET. I finally got it back this year though!

And even before then, I used free domains like .co.cc and .tk and such. But they don't count as purchases :-)

The first domain I registered was virtualbits.com but it's no longer mine as I let it lapse. That was almost 10 years ago. heh.

the first domain i ever bought was techvision.info for the simple reason that at the time i bought it, *.info domains were very low priced. I planned to use it for hosting although that never really took over but managed to use it to share some files with a couple of people and also run a small blog. Further down the line i bought a couple more domains ofwhich i still use and left techvision.info to expire since it was barely used before it expired. Since then i've gone on to purchase quite a number of domains from name.com for various purposes and have never had a problem with them. I'll certainly be purchasing more domains in the future from name.com

GetTheInterview.com was my first domain in 2004. Thought I was going to build it into a resume help service but never did anything with it. Still have it but just sitting.

My first domain is littlebigsite.com which I registered in 2002. Back then, I thought it was cute because it's contradicting "Little & big". It changed from a website offering free homepages to a news-like website. Now it's empty and I'm just using it for email hosting :) I can't believe I've had it for 8 years! :D

  • Jamie

My first domain was (my first/last name).org, which I got in 2008 at GoDaddy. Since moved to name :)

I do still have and use it. I currently own about 15 domains.

My first Domain Name was allenjayonline.com. It was like 2002 I think and I had no clue what to do with it. I had this brillant idea to start a clothing line, but I never used it. LOL

rejectedunknown.com - Feb 7, 2001 - started as a tiny fan site for my uncle Daniel Johnston, and few into a big (mess) site. I haven't managed it in a long time, but it's still going.

  • Jacob

jwstop.com - probably 8 years ago; was for personal use. Lasted about a year before I forgot to renew it. Won't make that mistake again!

  • http://openid.jeffharris.us/ Jeff

My first domain was harris.nu, way back when .nu domains were only $20-$30 a year and .coms were still $35 or more. I stopped renewing it when the price shot up to 60 Euros, and some fool picked it up.

All the other domains that I've picked up I'm still using because of email.

  • Cyn

I think ModernFreedom.com was the first one I registered. I was going to develop it into a site about how to be completely free in all aspects - physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually etc.

When I realized I wasn't going to have time to fully develop it, I listed it up for sale and sold it for 25 bucks. Later it was put up on Sedo for $1500 or so.

I don't think it's worth that much, but what I do know ;)

  • Ariel

    My firstone was ciudadesferica.com
It was like 3 years ago, still using it, and i hope for lots more years =)

  • http://availabledomainnames.com Nameclerk

CasualComputing.com about 12 years ago. I don't think I bought another domain until 2003. Dumb move.

  • Dale

I feel old posting this... On April 9, 1996 I purchased 4web.com and still own it today. Had some plans for it that did not work out and today I still use it for personal stuff. I think I paid $135 a year back then and soon will be moved to name.com. Once a big company offered me a lot of money for it and I turned it down. humm...

  • http://twitter.com/Bonesplitter Bonesplitter

Gameprops.com way back in August of 2005.

  • Aswin

my first domain is http://www.urtechnology.com and i purchased that one at Mar 30, 2009. I am very happy with that one.

I heared about the great service of name.com so i transfer my domain to name.com and i planned to renewal my domain for 8 more years :)

  • http://twitter.com/arunbasillal Arun Basil Lal

oh yea! my first domain name was millionclues.com and is still my base for all online operations. I still remember how I felt that day. I had to use a friends credit card, and we were on call early in the morning (about 5 am). I was so excited the last night that I couldn't sleep well.

The feeling of being a part of the internet, that was and is awesome :)

  • Fai9al

my first Domain was http://www.i4w.com it was in 2003, no i dont have it now

  • coltter

actually i don't like my first domain name and mention here, it was registered when i purchased for a shared hosting plan. i don't want to renew the domain, then it was quickly purchased by someone in US and then now it's available again, so funny.

  • http://www.webventures.net Mike

I bought maxpad.com around 1996, and had this big idea I was going to sell over-sized mouse pads on the web. Had a cool logo made up and just never followed through once I started running into production issues. I did not buy another name for 10 years. Sigh. Should have followed through. What I would not give to be sitting back at that keyboard in 1996 again. I can still remember spending hours looking up all these funny foul language domains.

  • rskala

My first is yourpolk.com since 2007, using it for a Polk County, Florida guide and my nameservers :D

  • Adam

Back in 2005 I registered sidney87crosby.com and unregistered it days later because I couldn't understand how to make a website. Six months later registered anomalyarcade.com and still have it today.

  • John

MakeSeriousCash.com 1997 then again in 1999 then again 2010 lol - the only name which happens to be the first that I accidentally did not renew picked it up twice on the drop and the last was an auction... <kicking my own head>

  • http://twitter.com/cfolk25 Chris Folk

    Well, the first domains "I personally" registered were: maaumpires.com, maaofficials.com & mablomaha.com.

All are still housed in their original home, Name.com, and are still actively used.

They were registered "Order Date: 09-09-2008 3:29 PM" -- to be precise :-)

hm.. let see.. I still remember my first domain name. It was something like salam.co.cc ( a free domain extension to say and other lots of free domain extensions), then i brought my first paid domain as salamforum.info in the year 2007 i think.I used it for a year and then didn't renewed it.
I know the domain is still there for me to register it :)

  • http://www.thehotiron.com/ Mike Maddaloni – @thehotiron

My first domain name was monehp.com, which is "phenom" spelled backwards. I used it for years for my personal email, then eventually turned off email as the spam was too much.

But I am most proud of my second domain name - GoPats.com! It was for my Patriots fan site which is still live today.

My first domain is siber.net bought through free hosting, if I'm not wrong mydomain.net but siber.net domain is control by free hosting in the year 1998.

The only seller that time for TLD is Network Solutions price around 40US 1 year.

Few year with siber.net and suddenly siber.net changed hand to other user without my authorize as I'm not the person who control that domain name that mean my siber.net gone.

  • http://twitter.com/trypnotik Rick Ramos

My first domain name was vibe-va.com. I built a site promoting local DJs and music events in Virginia in the early 2000s.

  • Koiphish

My first domain name was NebulaHosting.com back in 1999 for a web hosting company I had tried to start up. The domain got hijacked back when it was easy to do with Network Solutions. That is why I use Name.com now! :)

  • namedotcom

Awesome, thanks for the comments everyone! We'll be selecting our winner here shortly. :)

  • andrewhyde

endoze.com <- portfolio site. Still use it as my email base.

  • Minh Tam

    I bought http://www.luot.net in Name.com Expiring Domains, I'm still using it, 8.99$ :)

  • http://www.zhangjia.com Zhangjia

    I brought siutao.com at 1999.
On that time, Network Solutions is the only registrar. And I must pay for 2 year, US$35 per year.
The domain name is for non-profit purpose (for my organization) and now managed by other people on my organization.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/ajoull Ajoull

My first registered domain name was mitrakreatif.net in August, 2008.
    Yes, I still use it.
My first domain purchase was mitrakreatif.com. I was a newbie in web development. It was purchased from a local domain reseller in Indonesia. But then, they didn't give me the ability to renew it by myself. They didn't even register the domain under my name. Since I lost the dot com, I then purchased the dot net from name.com. So, I let the .com expired in another year, and purchased it back from name.com.

I had been registering domains in many registrants while learning how to control the domain ownership including DNS management. When I found name.com and its facilities and offers, especially the easiness on GoogleApps setup, I transferred all my expiring domains to name.com. I never purchased any domains from any other registrants ever since.

I'm still using it as a blog site and maybe future e-commerce. I remember it really well. It actually wasn't a purchase, per se. I got it through KnowledgeSutra.com (formerly trap17.com) by participating in the site's community.

  • http://www.testingcrunch.com/ Jyotiranjan

I registered my name jyotiranjanpanda.com in 2004. But after being not renewed it expired and deleted from the registry. But finally in 2009 i registered & secure that name once again and this time i never let it go. Although this domain is in parking stage now, in future i'll build a blog or personal web.

  • http://twitter.com/itssri itsSri

The first domain name I registered was itsSri.com and also the .net and .org variations in January 2005. My first transaction at Name.com was also the same domain set when I transferred them here, in January 2006.

Of course, I still have it and how can I ever forget it :P - it's my brand name that was coined using best branding practices.
    Short,
    6 letter
2 words - a common word its and other a popular proper name word Sri
    2 syllables
    Have all major TLDs
    No TM issues

    itsSri means 2 things.
    (1) it's Sri (sri is short for Srinivasa, my name) - unforgettable, isn't it?
    (2) The name ITSSRI expands to Information Technology Services, Systems, Resources Integrator - which neatly sums up my business - cool, ain't it?

I don't think I will ever forget my first domain, even though I no longer have it, my first domain was magick-me.org which was a personal website and blog. I brought the domain in 2003ish when I knew very little about them and paid $80 for two years PLUS $12 a month. I can't believe I was so silly at the time and thought I was getting a good deal. I was worried about dodgy dealers out there. Thankfully I am a lot wiser now and know where to go for my domain fix. :D

My first domain i registered was apunkaworld.com .. Yeah I still use it for my personal blog :)
My first domain purchase was a long journey though. Had been thinking to hit up and get one but since I didn't own a credit card, I had to wait. I then worked for some one for some dollars and asked him to buy me a domain instead of giving me the money
Thats how i received my first domain..
Today I have over 100 domains, but still apunkaworld.com is my most favorite due to obvious reasons

I am a blogger and using blogspot to write blogs and thinking to buy my own domain. I don't have any domain still but thinking to buy one. But confusing about the domain name and lots more thing.

    • Anonymous

Hey Daniel, you should totally purchase your own domain! If you visit http://www.name.com and type in your search terms (maybe your first and last name, or subject of what your blog is about) you'll be able to see if the domain name you want is available, or if someone has already registered it. Once you find an available domain click checkout and you are on your way (you will have to set up an account). Then I'd recommend using PageZen to get your blog started, PageZen (www.name.com/website-builder) is a really easy drag and drop platform that even has a 'blog' setting where you can create your 1 page blog. Best part, one page PageZen is always free and requires no additional hosting. If you buy a domain and choose not to use PageZen, you'll need to host the domain (http://www.name.com/services/hosting) which basically means you have to purchase a 'place' to store the files on your site. If you go with our hosting, you can use Fantastico to set up a word press blog.

Does that help get you started? Let me know if you have any more specific questions :)
